The commissioner receives the confession of the boss Tanu 'u Greco, who wants to withdraw from the mafia criminal organization that no longer follows the ancient code of honor. But the mafia does not allow affiliates to leave and, fearing that he may speak, kills him. Before dying, the old mafioso reveals to Montalbano the existence of an arsenal of weapons for the underworld hidden in a cave where Montalbano finds two skeletons next to which there is a large terracotta dog and a saucer with coins. After the examination of the skeletons reveals that they were killed, the commissioner decides to investigate even if fifty years have passed since the event. Thanks to the decisive help of the elderly Principal Burgio, his old friend, Montalbano will discover that the dead, Lisetta and Mario, were two young men killed, during the war, by a hitman of her father, possessive and violent to the point of incest; to arrange them in the cave with the dog and the coins (following the formula of an ancient Arab ritual) was a mutual friend, Lillo Rizzitano, to whose family the cave belonged at the time, and who returns specifically to Vigata to tell the commissioner everything.
