Note : Here's a little slice of late 80s fantasy horror, although I think spiritually this belongs in the 90s. It's a very simple but ok story, with some decent practical and optical effects, but it mostly stands out because of the very solid performances of Julian Sands (RIP) and Richard E. Grant, backed up by Lori Singer. It's a bit goofy and earnest, although it does have some fun with the fish out of water premise. Oh, and it's directed by Steve Miner, who you might know from Friday the 13th Part 2 and III, as well as House, Lake Placid, etc., and written by David Twohy, so there's some pedigree at work here.
Witch hunter Giles Redferne captures a notorious warlock in Boston in the late 1600s, but before the death sentence can be carried out, the warlock travels to the future to 1989 Los Angeles, and Redferne follows. The warlock is disoriented and taken in by waitress Kassandra and her roommate, but while she's out, the warlock murders the roommate, finds one part of a grimoire in an ancient table in the apartment, and sets out to find the other two pieces, with the help of some human eyes, not entirely legitimately acquired. Redferne arrives, and after some misunderstandings teams up with Kassandra, but the warlock puts a GILFication spell on her and she starts rapidly aging. Now it's a race against time and across the United States to restore Kassandra's youth, stop the warlock from getting the rest of the grimoire, and maybe fall in love. Those lovable time travelers!
This remaster is pretty middle of the road, but there's nothing to really complain about. Image is fine, sound is fine, commentary track reasonably worthwhile.
