Note : Tobe Hooper's career was nothing if not varied, and while the highs, like Texas Chain Saw and Poltergeist, are full-on classics, the lows are weird, but usually kind of interesting misses. This Stephen King adaptation is definitely one of the latter, and it's a bonkers concept, a possessed industrial laundry machine, translated into a gory, over the top phantasmagoria/X-treme industrial safety film with scenery-chewing performances and gonzo splatter deaths. The cast partaking of the set decoration and ham buffet includes the always chamaleonic and interesting Ted Levine, horror icon Robert Englund, dialing it up even more than usual, Daniel Matmor, Vanessa Pike, Jeremy Crutchley, and Danny Keogh.
At Blue Ribbon Laundry, the giant laundry press is nicknamed The Mangler, and when eccentric owner Gartley's niece Sherry cuts herself and splashes it with blood, at the same time as an old ice box comes into contact with the machine, it seems to acquire a mind of its own, and it's thirsty for blood. The first victim is an elderly woman who gets pulled into the machine and comes out the other end, well, mangled. Cop Hunton is assigned to the case, and his demonologist brother in law tries to convince him the machine is possessed, especially after the icebox turns out to have been haunted (yes, this is a Stephen King story). However, things get more complicated when they discover the whole town might be members of a demon-worshipping cult.
This isn't the greatest remaster, with murky shadows, slightly out of control saturation, and weird, inconsistent grain, but it's totally watchable, and you'll soon forget about that when the Acting starts. The 5.1 track sounds fine, and the commentary track sounds somewhat apologetic.
