Ringu (1998), directed by Hideo Nakata, hybrid 4k remaster, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including Japanese 6.1 remaster, original Japanese theatrical stereo, two commentary tracks, and subtitles in eleven languages.
IMDb : https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0178868/
Video encoded in two-pass 15.0 Mbps x265 10bit with the veryslow preset for archive quality image. Audio encoded separately with Apple AAC for the highest-quality AAC sound available. Text subtitles converted to SRT, image subtitles converted to VobSub and repositioned.
Note : Another do-over of a fairly old encode of mine, but from a newer, better source, adding both the 6.1 remaster, original stereo, and an additional commentary track, as well as subtitles in more languages. This is of course the film that started the wave of J-horror in the late 90s and early 2000s, which really took off with the American remake three years later. For my money, the remake is actually the better film, more pared-down, scarier, and lacking the connections to local folklore and Japanese tradition that this film tries to build, which makes the horror more alien and unknowable, but this is still a very good film, building a lot of creepy atmosphere out of fairly minimal elements, and it's very effective. The twist ending (essentially the same as in the remake) is unexpected and horrifying, and all in all, the whole film just drips with oppressive, unavoidable doom. Cast includes Nanako Matsushima, Hiroyuki Sanada, Rikiya Ôtaka, Miki Nakatani, and Yuko Takeuchi.
A TV journalist starts investigating the mysterious death of her niece, who died seven days after going on a trip to a forest resort with some friends. When it turns out all the friends died in different places at the exact same time, and she's been hearing rumors of a cursed videotape that kills everyone who watches it seven days later, she goes to the resort, finds and watches a strange videotape, and now has seven days to solve the mystery before she herself dies. Helping her is her mildly psychic ex-husband, the father of her young son, and things don't get easier when her son also watches the tape...
This is a nice 4k remaster, which I think accurately preserves the quite gloomy, dark cinematography. There's not that much detail in the shadows, but it's probably intended. Detail is fine, grain nicely controlled, and color somewhat desaturated, which I also think might be intentional. 6.1 remaster sounds good, as does the stereo, and with two commentary tracks, you can get all the additional info you'd like.
